What Is Mineral Makeup?

Mineral makeup is designed from all naturally occurring ingredients. Originally, it was often recommended by dermatologists to women with sensitive skin, rosacea, post operative, laser and other procedures because of its intrinsic skin soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. Powder makeup is made of finely milled minerals. It can provide sheer or opaque coverage, depending on the formulation and application. But, it still allows natural skin radiance to show through, so you won’t have the dreaded mask look. It is normally free of fragrance and preservatives. Minerals cannot feed bacteria, so there is no danger of spoilage, thusit needs no preservatives. It does not spoil or go terrible. It is very excellent for oily skin because it has several oil- absorbing components.

It is usually applied with a brush and is typically shown to be buffed into the skin. This technique forces the makeup into your pores, which is never a excellent thing. A technique that works with better quality mineral makeup (which we’ll discuss later) is to dust the makeup on, instead of buffing it. If a brush irritates your skin, you can also use a non-latex or flocked sponge. Application can be done either wet or dry.

What Are The Ingredients?

Mica – A natural glitter. Provides shimmer and sparkle.

Titanium Dioxide – A white natural sunscreen and anti-inflammatory agent. It is highly reflect, with only a diamond being higher, and thus minimizes fine lines and some skin discolorations.

Sericite – A colorless mica that can be used to cut the opacity of Titanium Dioxide and also works as an oil absorber.

Zinc Oxide – A natural sunscreen providing broad spectrum UVA/UVB protection.

Cornstarch/ Rice Powder- Cosmetic grade- An oil humectant (draws oil out of the pores). Can make acne worse as it is a source of food for bacteria.

Kaolin Clay – Natural oil-absorption.

Iron Oxides – Natural pigment- very opaque. Used for tinting cosmetics.

Ingredients To Avoid

These ingredients are also common, but can cause problems so are best to avoid.

FD&C Dyes- Derived from coal tar.

Talc/ Various Powders – Common fillers- can cause respiratory problems.

Ferric Ferrocyanide – Controversial because of its suspected toxicity.

Bismuth Oxychloride – Known skin irritant- causes itching, rashes and breakouts. Especially prevalent when the wearer sweats.

Carmine – Crushed beetles.

What Brand Should I Buy?

Well, if you’re familiar with mineral makeup, it’s likely you’ve seen the infomercials. After further research you’ll find these companies use controversial ingredients, and charge quite a bit for their products.

There are several excellent mineral makeup companies out there that provide a much better product at a more affordable price, as well as a superior customer experience. They also offer samples, which the larger companies do not. You will get to try the makeup (unlike in the drugstore!) for a fraction of the cost before you buy it. They do not have expensive advertising and packaging to pay for, so the savings are often passed on to you.

Most Americans today are well informed of the importance of calcium in the body. Few, but, are aware of the need for magnesium, an essential mineral which has a close relationship with calcium. In fact, calcium and magnesium are both necessary for strong bones and teeth. Showing that, without magnesium, calcium alone would be useless.

Magnesium makes up about .05% of the average person’s body weight. Sixty percent of this is found in the bones, while about 28% is found in the soft tissues of the liver and muscles – including the heart. Magnesium is the second most abundant intracellular cation in the body, involved in more than 300 enzymatic reactions involving glucose, stout and protein among many others.

What does that tell us about magnesium? Numerous studies have been conducted on the effect of magnesium on the body. In a study reported in the American Journal of Cardiology, 20% of patients with a trial fibrillation had a magnesium deficiency. In a study conducted in South Africa, a ten percent reduction in deaths caused by coronary heart disease was shown for every six milligrams per liter of magnesium in the water levels. In Oklahoma City, patients with low magnesium in their blood required more drugs to control hypertension that those with normal magnesium levels. Twenty patients receiving long term diuretics in Umea, Sweden, were given 345mg. a day of magnesium. After six months, nineteen of the twenty showed a drop in blood pressure.

Without the proper levels of magnesium in the body, results can be painful and destructive. The earliest symptoms of a magnesium deficiency include appetite loss, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, mental changes, irritability and seizures. Magnesium deficiencies may cause calcium deposits in muscles and kidney – often resulting in painful kidney stones. A deficiency in magnesium leads to the constriction of blood vessels as well as reducing the amount of oxygen in the blood. Germ life multiplies; intestinal putrification products build up; Schizophrenic tendencies, borderline insanity, neuroses and manic depressive disturbance may occur.

As a treatment option, magnesium can do many wonderful things. In combination with calcium, magnesium is useful in reducing hypertension. A diet high in magnesium may prevent heart attacks and heart disease and improve cholesterol. Magnesium can be used to treat PMS, prevent kidney stones, fight depression, prevent premature labor, aid the treatment of nervous disorders, and treat diarrhea, vomiting and indigestion. A combination of magnesium – vitamin B6 therapy is often used to treat patients with Autism. Patients with chronic fatigue syndrome often respond favorably to magnesium supplementation. Magnesium can also be used to cool nerves, make the body more flexible, induce restful sleep, and cool the body. Other benefits from magnesium supplementation include the following: It purifies the body tissues and prevents phosphates from depositing in joints, which may lead to arthritis, bone complications, and gout. Magnesium has also been proven to cool the liver, sooth nerve endings, prevent motor nerve contractions, end neurotic cramps and mellow the temper.

Magnesium is found in many food sources such as savory cabbage, dandelions, nettles, rye, barley, whole wheat, walnuts and almonds. The best food sources are whole grains and legumes. But, even if you believe you are eating plenty of magnesium-rich foods, you may still be deficient. Over 80% of magnesium is lost in the process of making refined white and enriched flours. Certain chemical additives used to keep frozen vegetables bright strip the food of its magnesium. In addition, there are many chemicals which deplete the body of magnesium. Diuretics and alcohol deplete what magnesium stores, while caffeine increases the excretion of magnesium, and phosphates, widely available in soft drinks, bind magnesium in the bowel and prevent its absorption. It is essential, furthermore, that one have sufficient calcium, vitamin C, and protein in order to absorb magnesium.

People with certain diseases are especially prone to magnesium deficiency, including patients with diabetes mellitus. Postmenopausal women and alcoholics are especially prone to osteoporosis caused by a lack of magnesium.

The only sure way to be confident that your body has sufficient magnesium is by magnesium supplementation, preferably by using a liquid source that is easily absorbed into the body’s cells.

When you want to get rid of extra weight, it is tempting to go on a liquid or a crash diet. These are well loved diet plans to lose weight quick because they produce results in a small span of time. Don’t buy into the hype of crash and liquid diets because they are not realistic over the long-term and they can place your health in jeopardy.

Dangers of Using Liquid Diets to Lose Weight Quick

Unless a liquid diet is prescribed and supervised by a medical professional, it is not a excellent way to lose weight. During a liquid diet, you replace your regular meals with low calorie nutritional drinks. While a liquid diet will help you drop several pounds in the first week or two, it can cause several problems. 

Since you are not likely to stay on a liquid diet for the rest of your life, the weight loss results you experience may not last. The minute you start eating solid food again, you are likely to gain all of the weight back.

Liquid diets are not as terrible as crash diets because they do allow you to get some nutrients into your body. But, the calorie restrictive nature of this type of diet may not provide you with enough of the nutrients your body needs to function properly.

For instance, most nutritional drinks do not contain much fiber, so if you drink them all the time, you may suffer from constipation. A liquid diet can also have the opposite affect and cause diarrhea.

Dangers of Using Crash Diets to Lose Weight Quick

During crash diets, you restrict your caloric intake by eating very small food. This type of diet can cause nutritional deficiencies that threaten your physical and mental health. Your body needs carbohydrates, iron, protein, calcium, vitamin C, omega-3, potassium and a host of other nutrients to function properly.

Being deficient in these nutrients can cause fatigue, muscle weakness, weak bones, cardiac arrest, gallstones, organ hurt, vision problems, low-blood sugar, muscle cramps, anemia, brittle hair, lowered immune system and several other problems.

Lack of nutrition can affect your brain by causing memory loss, depression, problems concentrating and slow reaction times. Crash diets can also make you obsessed with being thin and lead to eating disorder like anorexia and bulimia.

The weight loss results from crash diets are often small-lived. When you drastically cut the number of calories you consume, your metabolism slows down and your body uses fewer calories to perform. When this happens, it will become harder for you to shed weight, even if you continue to restrict your calories.

If you increase your calories even the slightest bit, you will gain all the weight you lost back, plus a few additional pounds.

Best Way to Lose Weight

The best way to lose weight and keep it off is by following a healthy eating plot.  An ideal eating plot should consist of a variety of nutritious foods that give your body the vitamins and nutrients it needs to stay healthy.

Any nutritional eating plot to lose weight is always more effective when you incorporate exercise. You should try to get one hour of moderate physical activity, five days a week. Doing weight bearing exercise two to three times a week can help increase muscle mass and accelerate your weight loss results.

Liquid diets and crash diets may help you lose a few pounds quick, but these diets can cause the yo-yo effect and result in nutritional deficiencies that endanger your health. If you really want to lose weight and keep it off, eat right and exercise.
